How to make your Blog SEO friendly
Search engine Optimization is crucial for every blog’s success. But as they say “charity starts from home” You need to optimize your blog before you start you start Search Engine Optimization for your blog. Well optimized blog with unique contents are likely to get batter exposure. And we wordpress publishers are really lucky as long as customization of blog is concerned. Unlike other blogging platforms wordpress is easy to use and highly customizable. Here are few tricks that will make your wordpress blog more SEO friendly.
Change permalink structure
By default Wordpress permalinks are like “yourblog.com/?p=12” like your readers those numbers at the end of url does not make any sense to search spider either. But as I said we wordpress publishers are very lucky. You can change this structure from your control panel to do so follow these steps
Control panel >>> Setting >>> Permalink
Here u gets 5 choices for permalink structure
Default yourblog.com/?p=123
Day and name yourblog.com/2008/06/24/sample-post/
Month and name yourblog.com/2008/06/sample-post/
Numeric yourblog.com/archives/123
Custom Structure
Custom Structure offers you the ability to create a various URL structure for your permalinks and archives. U can use different tags to create your custom permalink
%postname%
A clean version of the title of the post (post slug field on Edit Post/Page panel). So “This Is A Great Post!” becomes this-is-a-great-post in the URI
%category%
A clean version of the category name (category slug field on New/Edit Category panel). Nested sub-categories appear as nested directories in the URI.
%author%
A sanitized version of the author name. (Use this if you are Darren Rowse or Brian Clark)
Blogger’s lab Suggestion
While all the pro blogger insist using only postname tag for your permalink. I would recommend using category tag along with postname. This will give you batter permalink as well as wide rang of keywords in your URL
And here some more tags you can use to create your custom permalink structure
Note:You must change your Permalink structure in the initial stages when you start a blog. If you already have bunch of post runing on your blog i would suggest you to install Permalink Redirection Plugin
Customize single post title
Page title is an important part of SEO. Google includes it in search results. And you don’t want Google to display your blogs name in every search result rather then your killer post title.
The most appropriate for single post page would be post title or post title followed by your blog name (i.e. post title | your blog name) rather then unnecessary stuffs like Your Blog >> Blog Archive >> Post Title
Use this code to achieve such title structures
<title><?php if (is_home () ) { bloginfo(‘name’); }
elseif ( is_category() ) { single_cat_title(); echo ' - ' ; bloginfo(‘name’); }
elseif (is_single() ) { single_post_title();}
elseif (is_page() ) { single_post_title();}
else { wp_title(‘’,true); } ?></title>
This code will display your blog name on home page post title on single post page and category and blog name on category pages.
Make most of your Footer
Footer is a bunch of text displayed at the bottom of your pages. And it is probably the last thing that search spider would see. Footers usually look like this
Wordpress blog © Blog Name PassionDuo Blue theme by Dailyblogtips (if u are using free theme like I do)
Adding some keyword to the footer along with your blog name (Bloggers Lab | SEO Tips) or links to your blog categories will keep Google spider on your blog for little longer time
Wordpress publisher can edit their footer by navigating to Design >>> Theme Editor >>> footer.php. But don’t spam your footer with too many keywords and links.
These tricks will enhance your blogs appearance as well as make it more users friendly and search engine friendly

Changing your permalink structure to show the title of your blog post rather than the yourblog.com/?p=123 default is probably the single most important thing you can do to improve your seo. Everybody do this right now!
Great effort here, but for most people…(i.e. non-techie) this stuff is all still too hard. There are other blog software choices besides WordPress that deliver SaaS packages that are already optimized for SEO, have customer support folks that help with keyword selection, titles & all that.
At the end of the day, blogging is a marketing tool. Marketers don’t want to mess with code, they want to engage in dialog.
Hi there- thanks for the great tips on SEO. I am a new blogger and it seems that what I do is really hit and miss. I can write a comprehensive article on a random disease and get many more views than if I were to write about something more common. I also learned that you can make your title REALLY long like Natural-herbal-vitamin-mineral-solutions-for-psoriasis accidentally and it makes the page name that, but then you can just change the title to “Natural solutions for psoriasis” I am not sure if this is a good or bad thing with SEO, I like snappy fun titles and my blog manager is opposed to them for SEO purposes. I understand why, but it seems like from the standpoint as the new health blogger on the block, that really search engines will likely pick up more random things than anything else. For instance I am branding my site with “kitchen” and “kitchen table” because they are my top Google referring terms and get me a lot of “free traffic”.
Anyways, sorry to ramble, let me know if you have any suggestions that may be helpful. Thanks for the user friendly article. This stuff usually just makes my head spin and my eyes glaze so you should be VERY proud that I read this entire article word for word! LOL

I agree with you, google does not like dynamically created webpages, it much prefers static URL.
This is a good post. I dont understand the part about post title but it does make a lot of sense. I will try to find out how to implement that on my blog.

Some great tips here – although I’d say don’t use %category% in the permalinks. I had a bad experience once when I wanted to reorganise my categories and I ended up with a whole lot of broken links pointing to my site (because the post had a new permalink).

Thanks for the post. I will start making those changes to my blog. I created my title as “Little Tartlets” although my specialty lies with making cream cheese tarts. I have now realised that the most popular searches are cream cheese tarts, or strawberry cheese tarts. So, will have to make some changes. But anyway, thanks for the post again! Hope to see more of your updates.

Some good tips. Everyone is basic seo for regular website but blogs need same things. Most are very simple to do and make a big difference.
This is a fine artilce. Also to increase seo get the module SEO in one place of the wordpress website. I would also recomend adding keywords which you are targeting into your posts.
Really great tips. I guess this is only applicable for Wordpress themes.
I am new to blogging and have made a blog from blogspot…added this to the webmaster tools but shows cannot crawl, can someone check my site and tell me what i am doing wrong…

Thanks guys
Wow great information, I’m definitely going to use this as a resource for SEO advice now… Thanks!
This is really good. But I do not understand the idea of WORDPRESS to keep URL non SEO friendly as default. They can set Default ULD structure as SEO friendly and its only can be changed if user want to….and of course who want to change it. This will help NON Techiee people to have SEO friendly BLOG by default.
