How Do You Handle Comments On Your Blog

30 July 2008 38 views 20 Comments

A lot have been said about how to comment on other blogs and forums; we have seen many blogger talking about the so called “commenting manners “ where they tell you how to behave on other’s blog and what you shouldn’t do when leaving a comment on their blog. So I won’t waste your time repeating all the “etiquettes”

What I am about tell you is “how to handle comments on our own blog” my little guide for blogger about comments. Your Blog is your Virtual home in this cyber world and your readers and commentators are your guest, they have to behave and be respectful, to remain in your “home,” However you as a host have to show them the same respect in return. And that’s what we are going to discuss today.

Respond to comments:
I know you have read this in my other post about Blog comments and Blogging Community. But this is one thing many blogger tend to forget or simply ignore. This is one of the biggest mistakes you can make as a blogger. Responding to a comment is very important, responding a comment is your 1st step to converting a one time visitor in to loyal reader. Whenever you get a question via comments or a reader starts a conversation in the comments section, be sure to answer it.

Appreciate comments:
Comments are very important for any blog’s growth; many view it as a sign of popularity. When a reader leaves a comment, he is actually making a priceless contribution, by spending a good portion of his limited time. The least you can do is say a simple “thank you!.”

Create a Comment Policy:
Your readers won’t really know what’s allowed and what’s not on your blog, unless you tell them. A comment Policy becomes necessary. Unless you plan to solely rely on people’s common sense. Its batter to create your comment policy, rather then deal with future complications. Here is a good example of Pro Blogger comment policy & OptiNiche Comment Policy(Mine is under development). Put a link to the policy, right in the commenting form, so there’s no doubt about its existence.

Take care of the hobgoblin:
Make sure your blog doesn’t contain any sign of vulgarity, conflict or otherwise what could be described as bad vibe, in your comment section. This usually happens when controversy is created by conversation or by the article it self. The reason isn’t important, how you deal with such situation is important.

So what you do when such incident happen on your blog?
Fortunately no such incident happened on my blog so I can’t say anything about it, but I would love hear from you guys who have dealt with such problems. Pleas share your experience with me and other readers.

    Hey the comment policy is a great idea!~…I’ve had some not so “clean” but positive responses, and I was like..”what should I do with this one”.. I winded up putting symbols for letters and just responded as normal…lol
    Now with a policy I can say ” No obscene words..etc”..Thanks again

    Sunil -

    This is the post I was looking for. I like to respond to every comment as I consider that as the way to show your gratitude and respect to someone who took time to read your blog and left a comment as well. But lately, my articles have hit the front page of Digg and it has become hard for me to respond. I certainly feel guilty about that. Also, I have been receiving vulgar comments from same person over and over again. I don’t know what to do with it. This article certainly help though. Thank you for sharing my friend.

    @Shilpan u kidding me buddy

    you were getting hatred replies ? i cant believe this :shock: i dont know why some one will hate you or your blog in 1rst place?
    i have read your post and been following you since one month i never found any thing that might provoke some one then what was the reason for those vulgar comments?

    @MsTrisBeats
    yeah comment policy is really useful to tell your reader what you tolorate and what you dont, its batter to make your self clear rather then cleaning your comments :grin:

    Some of the most valuable blogs have rich content in the comments section – that’s a part of what makes them valuable. Some news-related blogs don’t need it, but it sure helps (I’m thinking of TechCrunch here). Community contribution is a key ingredient with blogs. Great post, Sunil.

    Hi Sunil,

    I read and then reread my comments. I then respond to each one individually. I love my community and want them to know how much I appreciate them taking the time to leave a comment.

    Although I visit some blogs where the author doesn’t acknowledge the comments, I do understand their hectic schedules.

    I actually just started my first blog ever, and I realized I dont have a comment policy or anything like that. You gave some great tips for a new blogger, thanks.

    Plenty of food for thought. Good article. The best part of this post that I liked was the fact that you mentioned that the commentator has spent some of his valuable time writing a comment and that has to be appreciated. I think bloggers that think like this unfortunately are few and far in between. Thank you sir.

    My blog is only three weeks old, but my biggest surprise so far has been the comment section. It is extremely rewarding to have people respond to what you say. Ignoring the comments just seems silly.

    As Blog Tips For Beginners said above, it is good to visit the sites of commenters. I sometimes forget to do this.
    I know a lot of people are bothered by comment moderation being turned on, but I find all the comments slip past me and not only might an inappropriate one get by, but I lose the chance to read and reply if moderation is not on.

    you should always respond to your comments… the way i moderate my comments is that a person’s first comment doesnt go live till i accept it… any comments they make after will show right away.. i guess you put a little trust in people

    @ Writer Dads your comment section is reward of your socializing with other blogger. commenting on other’s blog is the best way to socializing, and it helps you build your own little network of blogger who can help you promote your blog.

    @Tim Comment moderating is essential specially when your blog is dofollow (like Blogger’s Lab) you become a soft target for link spammers.

    @Millionaires we all have the same mechanism on our blog and thanks to wordpress programer for this great little code.

    Hi Louises and well come to Blogger’s Lab
    yeah comment relish is really a fab plugin. it can do wonder for your blog and if used well you will see your subscriber counts and comments section will be flooded
