6 Deep Linking Strategies That Actually Works

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

“Deep Linking” is the most useful but yet highly ignored feature of web 0.2. An effectual deep linking tactic is very important because it helps to increase page views as well as encourage your reader to stay longer on your blog by providing inviting links to content that may interest them, and well nested deep linking can help you improve page ranking of your post and pages.

In this article we are going to discuss such strategies which will help you improve deep linking all over your blog. Implement these tips on your blog and you will see your blog become more users friendly, and most importantly it will make your blog SEO friendly.

Create A Sitemap:
Sitemap is 1st step toward towards helping your reader find what they are looking for, but it is also an easy way to give your self piles of deep linking to your important pages and post. I hope you are not thinking about xml site map because only search spider can read it  . Rather think about actual page on your site which list all your post and pages.

You can create an html sitemap for your blog in fraction of minute with this cool plugin called “Sitemap Generator Plugin” from Dago Design, Sitemap generator automatically creates a sitemap for your blog with links to your posts arranged by category.

Frequently Asked Questions Page:
While this page is mainly used to answer most common questions about your blog or site, you can use this page to deep link to your post which you think is useful and can answer your reader’s question.

Create list of 10 or more common questions that your readers asks you. Partially answer them on your FAQ page and provide link to relative post with cute little note like “reader more about …….” For batter SERP when phrasing the question use keyword that readers are likely to use for search (Long Tail key words can be handy here), and your most appropriate key word as anchor text for the link to your post.

Related Post:
Linking to relevant post can help your readers to find additional information about the topic they are reading. Which result in increased page view and batter deep linking. You can manually create related post link at the end of your post, or you can have aplugin doit for you. WordPress users can download the Related Entries plugin which will automatically add related post link at the end of your post.

Show your most popular posts on your sidebar
Linking to your most popular post is another great way to increase page view as well as increase the deep links. Like deep link this can be done manually or automatically. Automatic updating of popular page is easier. Manual updating will require updates and changes whenever you want to feature new posts. While a plugin like MostWanted will eliminate the manual effort. Thanx to Jamie Carter and his Word Press’d 0.4 theme which automatically list my most popular post, latest post, recent comments and tag clouds all in one tab. So I can include other useful things on my blog

Write a series of posts:
This is my favorite strategy of this post. Writing a series of post is useful in many ways; it not only increases the deep link as your series go on, but also gets you piles of new subscriber because of sense of anticipation created by the future post of the series.

If you are writing 1,500 word post, consider breaking it into a series (without spoiling your idea).

Generate Periodic List of Your Popular Post:
This is kind of monthly (can be weekly or quarterly) summery of your blog, which list some of the most popular recent posts on the blog have published. It helps your reader find post which they might have missed. As well as introduce your new readers to some of your best work who may not have had the opportunity to read them.

You can always redo this whole process as you add more and more new content to your blog. You will find more and more opportunity to link your post as your blog grow older

  4. Website and Blog Monetization Tips Says:

Raman, You dont need a plugin if you are using blogger, blogger already has a built in xml sitemap..

  5. Sunil Says:

yes Blogger has inbuilt XML sitemap but unfortunately it doesn’t help you to optimize your internal/deeplinks

for that you need html sitemap which not only increas your internal links but also work as a site guide for your readers

Great article. I use blogger and have a link on my sidebar that says click here for a list of ALL posts in the main area and so human visitors can get access to all the posts. I do this in addition to a link that is the drop down menu of all posts. This allows people to access previous posts instantly without having to go through archives. Anyway, this is a well written article. Thank you Sir.

Hi Raj Welcome to Blogger’s Lab
I like your drop down menu its real neat and catchy
never seen before on any Blogpost blog

i wonder if you can share your trick with other fellow blogpost publishers like Raman

  8. Raj Krishnaswamy Says:

Thank you for those kind words. I am unfortunately not an IT expert as you can see from the title of my blog. For the benefit of Raman, the way I put the drop down menu was by reading bloggeruniversity.blogspot.com where they have given instructions on how to do this. Please read the post on Table of Contents - Another method. Later, I incorporated the Hide/Show-Expand Collapse element from consumingexperience.com so my side bar does not get cluttered. Hope this helps. Thank you.

Well, nice blog Sunil. I am highly impressed by the quality of the posts. It is very well written. However, about this post, I am not impressed by the fact that most of these stratergies have not been tried on your website. e.g. I could now locate a FAQ page, which you consider one of the most important aspects for Deep linking. It would be more practical to have all the techniques implemented. Always helps.
No offenses, you may not approve if u dont like it :)

That’s why blogs that have CommentLuv are cool. Because its a good way of deep linking. Especially if the blog has a good pagerank. :)

  12. Sunil Says:

    Hi Sameer
thanx for your valueable comment buddy and trust me i am not at all offended buy your comment. and i do believe “you must practice what you preach”.
but as you can see my blog is hardly 45 days old. you cant really expect people to ask question to a newbie who (though i had few mails from my readers lately but thats not enough to make a FAQ page) and i dont wanna use the standard page which yo find in every 3rd blog you visit  .

  13. Sunil Says:

Hi Paresh and welcome to Blogger’s Lab.

Hi Ganesh i am sorry mate but you are going off topic. we are talking about deeplinking your own post and pages on your blog, rather then having deep link by leaving comments on thers blog (though it is good tactics  )

  14. Barbara Swafford Says:

    Hi Sunil,

I like the idea of series posts too. I just started one which is the result of an interview I did. I divided it into 8 posts (the answers are long, but full of value).

FAQ-tastic is a great plugin for creating FAQ pages. I’ve been using it for a while on one of my blogs but I have never thought about using it for deeplinking.

    Hi Barbara
i haven’t read your Interview series yet but would love to read it as soon as i get some free time from my bussy working days (i whish there were 3 Sundays in a week  )

Hi Louise welcome to Blogger’s Lab
thanx for the plugin tips i’ll give it a try this week and will let you know about the result soon

  17. Allan from ViSwiss Says:

Having links at the top or bottom of your posts which point to the “previous” and “next” post is another strategy for deeplinking and ensuring all your pages are linked together.

I know something WP themes have this feature coded into them, but I would imagine there is a plugin out there somewhere that could accommodate this as weel.

Well, the strategies you have outlined above, they actually works in every sense.

    Yan

  20. Sunil Says:

Hi Allan and wellcome to Blogger’s Lab
you can achived that page navigation with a Wordpress Plugin called Wp-PageNavi

@Vikki there is nothing wrong with an xml sitemap, But it doesn’t help you with deeplinking, And your readers cant read it cause its nothing more then xml codes.

@Yan Thanx for the link love mate, its a great post and i’ll be linking to it in my post about linkbait
