4 Things To Help You Loose Plenty Of Blog Reader Every Day.

123 views 23 CommentsEmail This Post Email This Post

We all want to be read by more and more people, get plenty of comments, and have a huge blog with 5 figure subscribers. We try many things to achieve it. But some times we do things that can really turn a reader away very quickly. So let’s take a look at things that stops your readers from returning to your site.

Too Early Monetization:
I don’t care if a site has a couple ads trying to make some money, but if your page is messed with more ads then content, then don’t expect your readers to stick around for very long. I am not saying you are not allowed to make money with your blog. Or you can’t have ads on your pages. Just don’t let them get in the way of your content and buttons.

While not monetizing your blog might lose you a few dollars a day, but the advantage are far more then those few dollars.

It place stronger emphasis on your content. Which determines the size of your reader base. More room for your content, you can use those advertise space to display your best work, social widgets and other materials. Increase your chance for getting incoming links. Bloggers are less interested to link to a website that’s plastered with ads and all types of junk.

Not Responding/Respecting Commenter:
Your reader is taking the time out of his already busy schedule to leave his thoughts on your blog. The least you can do is to say thank you. Accept criticism if your reader have different view then yours don’t come down on them too hard, you can argue with what has been said but don’t argue with who said it.

The nastiest comments to reply are the ones that pick out mistakes or question your authority on topic in subject. And the bad way to deal with it is to not reply. The worst way to deal with it would be to delete the comment; it is the height of rudeness, don’t do it accept your mistakes and move on. We all make them from time to time.

Bad Navigation:
One thing that turns of many blog readers is bad navigation of blog, it really drives me crazy when I cant move through to find what I want, I want stay more then a minute when it drives me crazy.

The most important rule of designing a good website is to make it easy to navigate for your users to find what they are looking for. Any page on your site should be reachable with 2 clicks from your home page. For larger site it isn’t easy but offering a sitemap and site wide search can work great.

Bad Writing and Formatting:
Content is king but if your king is in bad attire then your reader want like it, Bad formatting, tiny font, messy color combination and long paragraphs and non-scan friendly content are really painful for my eyes.

No one is perfect, your reader understands that, but a little effort can make lots of difference

I agree with everything above, especially monetization. When a site only has a few readers, and yet it’s already littered with ads, it’s the biggest turnoff.

Sunil - You are right on money with your points. No matter how successful we become, we have to be mindful about these pitfalls.

I completely agree with you man.

By the way, can I write some of its contents in my blog, adding on my own perspectives too!

    @Shilpan and Writer dad
Early monetization is the bigest killer of a new blog, you wont get desired success if your ad box out number your post count,

But i have seen many established blogs who never learned that either, they have occupied every single pixel of their blog to display their affiliate links and banner.

Every buddy wants return of their hard work in form of money but doing so at the cost of your readers is really insane.

@Enfotainers i don’t mind you copying my work as this blog’s motto is to share the knowledge and experience with other. But i insist a link back to my post if you copy a sentence or paragraph from my blog, its a fare deal mate in return you will get track back that dofollow

It always cracks me up when someone will have all of those “advertise here” buttons…and yet you can tell the blog is less than a month old and not getting much traffic.

How do you like the navigation of this theme? (dailypress) I am using it on one of my sites and am already thinking of switching because of some issues with category & archive pages…

    Hi Sunil,

These are all great points. I especially agree that our blogs must be easy to navigate. If people can’t find previous posts, or other writings of ours, we can easily lose them.

Respecting comments is also a big “to do”.

I love your new design. Great job!

Hi Sunil: Well written post. In conjunction with early monetizing, I have also come across thoughts that one should wait a significant period prior to putting up ads. What would you say is the demarkation time period or user level when ads can be implemented and how does this change ( if it even does ) depending upon the subject matter of one’s blog? For example, when does one start putting ads if he is blogging about cars or blogging about fiction. Thank you, Sir.

That tip about monetization sure sets the record straight. Who wants to read a site where the content is on equal footing with the ads around it. It would be like looking in an encyclopedia that has sections of the pages covered with LED lights to distract from the information present.

Not responding to comments, is one of the worst mistakes you can make as a blogger. Also, not responding to emails, it makes your readers think you don’t care about them. People will stop reading a blog, simply because you didn’t respond to them, and yet so many bloggers fall to that horrible mistake.

    nice article,
But you might want to change the spellings from ‘Loose’ to ‘Lose’.
‘Loose’ is used in the sense:
    My pants are so loose!
    hope you get it!
    Keep it up!

The navigation one is a biggie. Sometimes you’ll think you have a good theme setup until you start getting large amounts of traffic and then you’re getting complaints on navigation you never thought about.
